OMA
The Rotterdam-based Office for Metropolitan Architecture is led by Rem Koolhaas, Ole Scheeren, Ellen van Loon, and Joshua Ramus. Since its establishment in 1975, OMA has worked extensively in Europe and increasingly in Asia. The OMA-designed Seattle Public Library opened in May 2004. The highly acclaimed building is divided into eight horizontal layers, each varying in size to fits its function. OMA is currently working on its largest project to date: a new headquarters and cultural centre for China Central Television in Beijing, to be completed for the 2008 Olympic Games.
OMA
John Pawson
Known for his distinctive, minimalist style that celebrates simplicity and materials in their rawest form, Pawson has had a high-profile year. In February 2004 the groundbreaking, although ill-fated, Marks & Spencer Lifestore opened in Gateshead. Later in the year his monastery for Trappist monks in Novy Dvur, Czech Republic, was completed.

Enric Miralles/Benedetta Tagliabue
In 1991 Benedetta Tagliabue joined Enric Miralles’ studio, and together they founded EMBT Arquitects in 1993. Tagliabue continues to direct the studio, following Miralles' death in 2002. Recently completed projects include the Hafencity Port in Hamburg, the School of Architecture in Venice, and the new Scottish Parliament Building, Edinburgh. The site of this building at the end of the Royal Mile and the materials used in its construction – oak, steel and stone – give it both a sense of nationhood and permanence.
